Practicing Gratitude in Ministry: Finding Joy in Serving Others

Expressing gratitude is a powerful form of worship and thankfulness for God’s goodness and provision. When we give thanks for the blessings we’ve received, we acknowledge that all good things come from God. In Psalm 136:26, the psalmist declares, “Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever.”

Practicing gratitude can take many forms and involves not only our words, but also our actions and our attitude.

Attitude

Our attitude has a direct impact on how we communicate and connect with others. A Christ-like attitude is marked by selflessness, humility, respect, and thinking of others more than ourselves.  It means smiling and showing kindness, compassion, and seeing others as Jesus sees.   As Philippians 2:3-11 reminds us, our attitude should mirror that of Christ – serving in love and humility.

God has placed us in specific communities and relationships, pouring His love and gifts into us so that we may serve one another. Serving keeps us rooted in Him and shifts our focus from “me” to “we.”

Actions

Gratitude is also expressed through our words and actions and can include quality time, physical touch, words of affirmation, acts of service, or gift-giving and receiving. Most people long to feel valued, appreciated, and loved. People need the assurance and security that love and appreciation can bring. Simple gestures like a smile, a handwritten note, a thoughtful text message, or a phone call can make a profound impact. It’s offering a hug to show that you like, love or value that person.  (Research shows hugging for at least 10 seconds leads to reduced stress and strengthens our connection with others.)

Words

Words of affirmation are encouraging and positive as we express love, appreciation, admiration, joy and thankfulness. Never underestimate the power behind simple statements such as “I love you,” “Thank you,” “You are a gift from God,” “I appreciate you,” or “Thank you for how you serve the Lord by serving others.”

Prayer is another powerful way to show love and gratitude. When someone asks for prayer, take the opportunity to stop right then and pray with them and for them.

Gratitude leads to praise, and praise leads to joy—for ourselves and for others. “The Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:23-24).

Finding Joy in Serving

As we serve others, we are reminded of the importance of compassion and kindness. Serving draws our eyes away from ourselves and allows us to focus on others. It is easy to get caught up in our own worries and problems, but when we serve, we can find joy in helping someone else. “Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs” (Psalm 100:2).

Look for opportunities to be a blessing to those around you, whether it’s within your church, your family, or your daily interactions. In doing so, you not only reflect the heart of Jesus, but you also cultivate a spirit of joy and gratitude in your own life.
